Throne of God

The image of the divine majesty — expressed in the Pantocrator dome, the holy table, and the eschatological vision.

The Throne of God (thronos tou Theou) is a central image in both Scripture (Isaiah 6, Revelation 4-5, Ezekiel 1) and Orthodox liturgical theology. The holy table (altar) is an image of the divine throne; the bishop's cathedra is an image of the throne. The Pantocrator icon in the dome images Christ enthroned as the Almighty above the assembled Church. The Deisis icon shows Christ enthroned with the Theotokos and John the Baptist interceding. The eschatological vision of Revelation — the Lamb on the throne, surrounded by the twenty-four elders — is the archetype of which every liturgical gathering is an icon.
