Altar
The holy table — the central liturgical furnishing of the sanctuary, the throne of God and the table of the Eucharist.
The holy table (hagia trapeza, holy table) is the central furnishing of the Orthodox sanctuary: a square table typically of wood or stone, covered with multiple cloths, on which the antimension is placed and the Divine Liturgy is celebrated. The holy table is simultaneously the throne of God, the altar of sacrifice, the table of the Last Supper, and the tomb of Christ. Nothing touches the holy table except the liturgical vessels and the hands of ordained clergy.
