Bema
The sanctuary — the raised platform behind the iconostasis where the altar stands, the image of the heavenly throne room.
The bema (from 'step') is the elevated sanctuary area of an Orthodox church, separated from the nave by the iconostasis. It contains the holy table, the table of oblation, and the bishop's throne. Access is restricted to ordained clergy. The raised elevation physically expresses the heavenly character of the liturgical action: the altar is an image of the Throne of God.
