Nave
The main body of an Orthodox church — the space of the assembled faithful, standing on earth before the heavenly sanctuary.
The nave (naos, temple) is the main space of the church, between the narthex and the iconostasis. The faithful stand in the nave during the Divine Liturgy — Orthodox churches traditionally have no pews. The nave is 'earth' to the sanctuary's 'heaven': the people of God assembled below while the liturgical action of heaven takes place beyond the iconostasis. The domed ceiling typically bears the icon of Christ Pantocrator.
