Vigil
An all-night service — the combination of Vespers and Orthros on the eve of great feasts; the long darkness giving way to light.
The All-Night Vigil (agrypnia, sleeplessness) combines Great Vespers, Orthros, and the First Hour. It is the Church's full expression of preparation for a feast. The All-Night Vigil on Holy Saturday/Pascha is the supreme instance: the long darkness giving way to the light of the Resurrection.
