Solea
The raised area immediately before the iconostasis — the liminal zone where heaven and earth meet in the distribution of communion.
The solea is the raised platform immediately in front of the iconostasis, forming a step between the nave floor and the royal doors. The amvon projects from the solea into the nave. The solea is the liminal zone: the place where heaven and earth meet in the distribution of Holy Communion. It is where the deacon leads the litanies, the priest gives the blessing, and the faithful receive the eucharist.
