Orthros Structure

The internal structure of the Orthros service — the most complex of the canonical hours.

The structure of Sunday Orthros includes: the Opening (Trisagion, Psalm 3); the Six Psalms (Psalms 3, 37, 62, 87, 102, 142); the Great Litany; the kathismata (Psalter sections); the Polyeleos (on feast days); the Anabathmoi (antiphons of the tones); the Prokeimenon and Gospel reading; the canon (nine odes); the Praises (Psalms 148-150 with stichera); the Great Doxology; the Troparion; the dismissal. The full structure typically takes 1.5-2 hours.
