Canon

A rule or standard — both the canonical books of Scripture and the Church's disciplinary legislation from the councils.

Canon (rule, measuring rod) has two primary uses. First: the canonical books of Scripture — those received by the Church as inspired and authoritative, including the deuterocanonical books of the Septuagint. Second: the canons of the Ecumenical Councils — the disciplinary regulations governing the Church's life. These are not merely human laws but expressions of the Church's received understanding of right order.
