Holy Synaxis

A commemorative feast on the day after a Great Feast — honoring those who were present at the original event.

A Holy Synaxis (hagia synaxis) is the feast celebrated on the day after a Great Feast, honoring those who participated in the original saving event. The day after the Theophany (January 7) is the Synaxis of St. John the Baptist, who baptized Christ. The day after the Nativity (December 26) is the Synaxis of the Theotokos, who bore the Incarnate Word. The day after the Annunciation (March 26) is the Synaxis of the Archangel Gabriel. The synaxis expresses the Church's gratitude for the holy persons through whom the saving events came about.
