Compline
The night prayer — the last of the canonical hours, prayed before sleep; Great Compline contains the Great Canon during Lent.
Compline (Apodeipnon, 'after supper') concludes the day. Great Compline, used during Great Lent, includes the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete and is among the most penitential services of the year. The Orthodox understanding: sleep images death; the monk who has prayed compline has 'died' to the day and committed his soul to God.
