Zosima of Solovki

Co-founder of the Solovetsky Monastery (15th c.) — one of the great monastic founders of the Russian North.

St. Zosima of Solovki (d. 1478) is one of the three founders of the Solovetsky Monastery on islands in the White Sea — along with Ss. Savvaty and Herman. The Solovetsky Monastery became one of the great centers of Russian Orthodox monasticism, and the three founders are venerated together on a shared feast day (August 8 / April 17). St. Zosima received the vision that established the monastery's definitive location and governed the community through its early growth. The Solovetsky islands later became infamous as one of the first Soviet concentration camps.
