Zeon
The hot water added to the chalice at the Divine Liturgy — symbolizing the fervor of the Holy Spirit.
The Zeon (from zeo, to boil, to be hot) is hot water poured into the chalice at the Divine Liturgy just before communion. The priest pours it while saying 'The fervor of faith, full of the Holy Spirit.' The theological symbolism: the hot water images the fervent activity of the Holy Spirit in the eucharistic mystery, and the warmth of the communion received. The practice is ancient and distinctive to the Byzantine rite. In Russian practice a separate vessel (the zeonnik) is used to heat the water specifically for this purpose.
