Triumph of Orthodoxy

The restoration of icon veneration in 843 AD — celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent; the vindication of all seven councils.

The Triumph of Orthodoxy (March 11, 843 AD) is the date on which Empress Theodora ended the second period of Byzantine iconoclasm and restored icon veneration. It is celebrated annually on the First Sunday of Great Lent, when the Synodikon of Orthodoxy is read: proclaiming all the definitions of the seven Ecumenical Councils and anathematizing all condemned heresies. The feast is understood as a celebration not merely of icons but of the entire Orthodox theological tradition.
