Theopathy
Divine suffering — the question of whether and how God can be said to have suffered in the Incarnation.
Theopathy (from theos, God, and pathos, suffering) is the theological question of divine suffering: did God suffer in the Passion? Orthodox theology resolves this through the communicatio idiomatum: the divine Person of the Son truly suffered in his human nature — 'God suffered in the flesh' is orthodox. But the divine nature itself cannot suffer — it is impassible. The formula is: 'The impassible one suffered passibly.' This is not a contradiction but a Christological precision: the subject who suffered is divine; the mode of suffering is human.
