Sticheron
A liturgical hymn inserted between psalm verses — the most common hymn type in Byzantine Vespers and Orthros.
A sticheron (from stichos, verse) is a hymn inserted between the verses of a psalm — the most common hymn type in Byzantine liturgical practice. Stichera appear at Vespers (the Stichera at 'Lord I have cried'), at Orthros (the Stichera at the Praises), and elsewhere. Each sticheron is a brief theological meditation on the feast or saint being commemorated, set to one of the eight tones. The corpus of Orthodox stichera represents one of the largest bodies of theological poetry in any tradition.
