Soul Saturday

A Saturday of universal commemoration of the departed — the Church's prayer for all the dead, known and unknown.

Soul Saturdays (Psychosabbaton) are the Saturdays designated for universal commemoration of the departed: prayers offered for all the faithful who have fallen asleep, known and unknown. The principal Soul Saturdays are: the Saturday before the Sunday of the Prodigal Son, the Saturday before Meatfare Sunday, the Saturday before Pentecost, and others. Saturday is the day of rest, of lying in the tomb — the fitting day to pray for the departed awaiting the resurrection.
