Silouan the Athonite
Russian-Athonite monk (1866-1938) — the theologian of keeping the mind in hell and despairing not.
St. Silouan the Athonite spent his entire monastic life on Mount Athos. His theology, preserved and developed by his disciple Archimandrite Sophrony, centers on two insights: the nearness of God to every person ('Hold your mind in hell, and despair not'), and universal love as the criterion of genuine spirituality: 'Love your enemies — if you cannot love your enemies, you have not yet begun to be a Christian.' Glorified in 1988.
