Reading
The liturgical reading of Scripture — a sacramental act by which the living Word addresses the gathered assembly.
Anagnosis (from ana, again, and gignosko, to know — to recognize again) is the liturgical reading of Scripture at the Divine Liturgy and other services. In Orthodox theology, the reading of Scripture in the liturgical assembly is not merely informational but sacramental: it is the living Word of God addressing the gathered Church through the reader. The reader is ordained (as a minor order in monastic communities) or appointed; the congregation stands for the Gospel reading in reverence for the Lord who speaks.
