Paisios Velichkovsky
Ukrainian-Romanian staretz (1722-1794) — the renewer of hesychasm in the Slavic world; translator of the Philokalia.
St. Paisios Velichkovsky translated the Philokalia into Church Slavonic (the Dobrotolubye, 1793) and became the principal agent of the hesychast revival in the Slavic world. As abbot of Neamtz Monastery in Romania, he gathered hundreds of disciples and formed a network of monastic communities throughout Russia, Romania, and Ukraine. His disciples became the elders of Optina Monastery.
