Holy Oil
Oil used in the sacraments of Chrismation, Holy Unction, and blessings — sanctified matter as vehicle of divine grace.
Oil (elaion) in Orthodox sacramental theology is not a mere material substance but a sanctified vehicle of healing grace. It is used in Chrismation (the consecrated myron), in Holy Unction (euchelaion), in baptism (pre-baptismal anointing), and in the blessing of homes and people. The use of oil connects to the scriptural images of healing (the Good Samaritan; James 5:14-15) and to the anointing of kings, priests, and prophets in the Old Testament.
