Holy Fire
The miraculous light that descends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Great Saturday — documented since the 4th century.
The Holy Fire is a miracle reported annually at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Great Saturday. According to the tradition, the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem enters the Tomb of Christ and receives a light that initially does not burn, then distributes it to the congregation. The fire is carried to Orthodox communities worldwide. The miracle has been documented in pilgrims' accounts since at least the 4th century. Its theological significance: the light of the Resurrection breaking forth from the Tomb, given to the faithful on the eve of Pascha.
