Epiclesis in Marriage
The invocation of the Holy Spirit in the marriage service — asking God to crown the couple with glory and honor.
The epiclesis in the Orthodox marriage service is the moment at which the priest places the crowns on the heads of the bride and groom while saying 'The servant of God [Name] is crowned unto the handmaiden of God [Name], in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.' The crowning is itself the central act of the Orthodox marriage service — and the crown images both the martyrs' crown (marriage as martyrdom) and the eschatological crown of the Kingdom.
