Dorotheos of Gaza
6th-century Palestinian monk — his Discourses and Sayings are a masterwork of practical monastic teaching.
St. Dorotheos of Gaza (c. 505-565) was a Palestinian monk whose Discourses and Sayings are among the most practically useful and psychologically precise texts in the Orthodox ascetical tradition. His image of each soul on the circumference of a circle, with God at the center: the closer each moves toward God, the closer each moves toward the others — and vice versa. His teaching on self-accusation (always blaming oneself rather than others) is the basis of much subsequent Orthodox spiritual direction.
