Desert Fathers

The Egyptian and Syrian monks of the 3rd–5th centuries — the founders of the Christian ascetical tradition.

The Desert Fathers and Mothers withdrew into the Egyptian desert from the late 3rd century. They developed the first systematic account of the spiritual life: the struggle against the logismoi, the practice of hesychia, the relationship with a spiritual father, and the progression toward apatheia and agape. Their wisdom was preserved in the Apophthegmata Patrum (Sayings of the Fathers) and has remained foundational for Orthodox spirituality ever since.
