Cathedra

The bishop's throne — the seat of episcopal authority in the cathedral church; from which the word 'cathedral' derives.

The cathedra (throne, chair) is the bishop's liturgical seat in the sanctuary of his cathedral church. 'Cathedral' means simply: the church that houses the bishop's cathedra. From the cathedra the bishop presides over the Liturgy, delivers homilies, and exercises his teaching authority. The cathedra is both the practical seat of episcopal governance and the symbol of apostolic authority: the bishop sits in the seat of the apostles.
