Burial Office
The funeral service — the Church's prayer for the departed and farewell to the body, oriented entirely toward the resurrection.
The Orthodox burial office includes the singing of psalms and troparia, the reading of the Beatitudes, and the final kiss of the faithful who venerate the body. The service is not a memorial to the deceased's accomplishments but a prayer for their passage: 'Give rest, O Lord, to the soul of your servant who has fallen asleep.' The body is buried facing east, toward the resurrection.
