Aer

The large veil used to cover the eucharistic gifts during the proskomide and at the Great Entrance.

The aer (air, breeze) is the large liturgical veil, typically embroidered, that covers both the diskos and chalice during the proskomide and is waved over them at the cherubikon during the Great Entrance as a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit. At the reading of the Creed the priest waves the aer over the gifts in some traditions. It is one of the three veils used in the eucharistic liturgy alongside the smaller diskos and chalice covers.
